Vintage Egyptian Revival Pectoral Necklace With Matching Earrings By Arthur Pepper “ART”

A wonderful striking multi-coloured pectoral necklace with accompanying drop earrings dating from the 1960’s made by the Arthur Pepper company that was based in New York.  The necklace is composed around the centre throne with a kneeling pharaoh and flanked on each side by large falcons that have been glazed in turquoise and red colours.  The god Horus was represented in Ancient Egypt by a falcon.  There is so much detail overall in this necklace – ending with five linked drops of small marbled colourful beads interspaced with gold roundels on which hang gold-toned charms of three different pharaoh faces which are the same each side and two Ankh symbols (Ankh is the symbol of life).  The linked chain is made up of small gold-toned round embellished disks likely a representation of solar sun disks that were powerful religious symbols in Ancient Egypt. The Necklace closes with a fold over clasp.  The matching articulated clip-on earrings each have a plaque of a pharaoh’s face depicted with three dangling chain drops of small colourful marble beads and gold-tone roundels.  Although the necklace is unsigned each earring is marked “ART” with the copyright symbol.

On display at the Metropolitan Museum in New York there is a pectoral necklace that was found amongst items of  jewellery discovered in the tomb of the Princess Sithathoryunet in Egypt.  The ART pectoral necklace does seem to resemble a lot of the elements from this antiquity and wonder if this was perhaps the inspiration behind Arthur Pepper’s pectoral necklace design as the similarities are quite striking!
