Vintage 1950’s Christian Dior by Mitchel Maer “Etruscan Revival” Festoon Necklace

£865.00

A stunningly beautiful ornate festoon necklace in the “Etruscan Revival” style featuring seventeen small drop pendants each one embellished with a claw set foiled back paste in lovely pastel hues of aqua, pink, pale yellow and white all in a brushed gilded yellow gold based metal. This necklace is a very well known design created by Mitchel Maer for Christian Dior dating from the mid 1950s.  Although this necklace does not have the usual plaque marked “Christian Dior by Mitchel Maer” (as during the period of liquidation of the Mitchel Maer company they had to remove any such plaques) it is however attributed to Mitchel Maer for Dior.  The back of hook clasp shows the remnant of where the plaque was subsequently removed.  The removal of the plaque was a prerequisite before the company’s bankrupt stock could be sold off in 1957.  Unsigned – but attributed to Mitchel Maer for Christian Dior. c. mid 1950’s.

In the early 1950’s American born Mitchel Maer settled in England and started his own jewellery manufacturing business and from 1952-1956 Mitchel Maer was commissioned by the house of Christian Dior to design and create wonderful pieces of jewellery for them. During this short period he designed and created the most exquisite pieces of jewellery which have now become very sought after by collectors and those that have come to admire and love his creations.

Unfortunately there is very little known or documented about Mitchel Maer and the demise of his company, however there is no doubt that he left his mark with a legacy of exquisite, unique and beautifully crafted jewellery of the 195o’s era.
