• After every wearing, gently wipe off the oils, makeup and dust from your jewelry using either a soft micro fiber or jewelry polishing cloth.

• If you would like to give your jewelry a more thorough cleaning, mix a few drops of mild dish soap into some warm (not too hot) water. A great way to remove stubborn dirt is by gently rubbing the affected area(s) with a soft-bristled tooth brush.

• When you are done cleaning, gently brush and/or rub all areas of your setting(s), and then rinse your piece under lukewarm, running water. Be sure to pat it completely dry right away using a soft, clean cloth.

Before applying any cleaning methods, test them on an inconspicuous spot – particularly if working with older, lower-grade, costume jewelry.

Know What to Avoid

Certain practices can quickly damage vintage pieces:

• Never use ultrasonic cleaner unless you are sure your piece is suitable (very few vintage settings are).
• Never use toothpaste, baking soda, or dips on plated jewellery or costume jewellery (they eat the finish).
• Keep perfumes, hairspray, lotions, and cleaning solutions off of your jewelry. Apply these things before putting on jewelry.
• Remove jewelry for swimming, showering, and working out – water, salt, chlorine and perspiration accelerate tarnishing and weaken the settings.

Proper Storage Makes a Big Difference

How you store your vintage jewellery is just as important as how you clean it.

• Keep each piece separately packed in a soft pouch, jewellery roll, or padded box to avoid scratches and entanglement.
• Jewellery should be kept in a cool and dry place out of sunlight and moisture. Moisture is one of the leading factors that can cause tarnishing in old metals.
• In case of fragile and precious jewellery, use anti-tarnish strips or keep them in sealed boxes.
• Separately hang your necklaces instead of stacking them, while securing the clasps to avoid tangles.
